A complaint filed in the Islamabad High Court on Monday challenging the closing of Geo News with the cord and the transfer of the station to a lower number, was accepted at a court hearing on March 17.
Islamabad High Court Judge Athar Minallah will lead the court tomorrow.
The petition letter was sent to Barrister Jahangir Jadoon by Raja Ahsan Mahmood Satti.
The petitioner has appointed a cabinet secretary as part of the case, along with the minister of IT and the special assistant to the prime minister for details.
The applications also nominated NAB Chairman Javed Iqbal and Pakistan Eletronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman Saleem Baig.
With this request, it has emerged that the court should announce the ‘illegal’ control of the media and that Geo News should be reinstated to the station that was in place before the arrest of Jang Geo Group’s managing director, Miri. Shakil-ur-Rahman.
The petitioner suggested that the closure of Geo News is a journey to end the media and control, which is unconstitutional.
Those named / participating in the petition must stop harassing the media, the petition urges.
On March 13, cable operators across Pakistan began receiving orders to immediately shut down the Geo TV broadcast or give the station the final numbers.
The orders were issued after SAPM Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan held his press conference regarding the arrest of Jang Geo Group Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman of Jang Geo.
The closure reportedly follows orders from PEMRA, but the chairman of PEMRA himself denied that he had issued orders for the scheme.
