New York Fashion Week with 2017’s girls
Marc Jacobs closed out New York Fashion Week 2017 with today’s “it” girls and an operatic finale, playing the aria from “La Wally” used in the movie “Diva.”
Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, “America’s Next Top Model” champion Winnie Harlow, and Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber all modeled Jacobs’ latest collection, featuring brilliant colors like orange and yellow, and big, bold floral prints. Turbans, tassels and bags — including fanny packs — added to each look Wednesday.
Using big names has become increasingly popular on the runway. Other stars strutting throughout the NYFW festivities include Gigi Hadid, Teyana Taylor, Kate Upton, Ashley Graham, Stella Maxwell, Adriana Lima, and Lionel Richie’s daughter Sofia Richie. Rihanna also delighted the crowd by riding a motorcycle on stage for the unveiling of her Fenty Puma clothing line.
Others, like design duo Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, worried less about trends and relied more on cultural inspiration from an Edwardian heiress adventurer. Their collection featured a one-shoulder ball grown in blush and a tulle gown with cape sleeves, and an ivory cocktail dress with a satin bodice and ostrich feather skirt.
“Ultimately it’s a very quintessentially Marchesa collection,” added Chapman. “I think we view our collections as a storybook continuing from one season to the next. … Our pieces we want to see as timeless, not as pieces that are done for the season.”
Michael Kors, meanwhile, mixed a little of everything with a beach collection, featuring models in very relaxed, wearable pastel dresses and skirts featuring palm frond patterns and tie-dye. His choice of footwear was downright carefree.
“I thought, ‘How can we blend that sort of big city life with this barefoot beach life? Certainly in my career we have never shown evening clothes with flip-flops. We are!” Kors said Wednesday.
Famous faces were also watching the unveiling of bright, colorful new styles from Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, Jeremy Scott, Calvin Klein, Adam Selman, Tracy Reese, Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, Heidi Klum, Oscar de la Renta and more.
Notables in the audience included Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ciara, Julianne Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Olivia Culpo, Nina Dobrev, Brooke Shields, Kate Bosworth, Trevor Noah, Christina Ricci, Paris Jackson, Jessica Alba, Emma Roberts, Jim Carrey, Selena Gomez, Bella Thorne, Jared Leto and Lionel Richie.
