In House of the Dragon’s fifth episode, fans got a taste of another royal wedding in Westeros that had death and doom written all over it. The prequel’s new episode wasn’t as terrible as The Red Wedding, but it was bloodier than imagined.
In the sixth episode, King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) hosted a sumptuous party for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon. Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) killed Laenor’s lover, Joffrey, after the grand feast. Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) were dancing when the horrible killing occurred.
The episode ended with the Targaryens and Velaryons gathering for a modest, secret wedding where Rhaenyra and a devastated Laenor exchanged vows. As the wedding ritual ends, King Viserys collapses, and everyone rushes to his aid.
Given the episode’s focus on Viserys’ health, many viewers were puzzled over whether he died. Viserys survives as the show jumps nearly a decade, according to a new preview for the next episode. In the sixth episode, Rhaenyra is played by Emma D’Arcy instead of Milly Alcock. Alicent Hightower is played by Olivia Cooke.
